RLW Roofing was appointed by Kier Construction to carry out the roofing and cladding works at South Staffs College in Tamworth. The project involved a modern college facility, with RLW responsible for installing a mix of roofing systems, rainscreen cladding, and a number of detailed aluminium capping elements.
During the design phase, RLW faced a complex challenge relating to the installation of the cladding system. The clearance between the new cladding and the neighbouring boundary wall was less than 500 mm, significantly restricting access. To address this constraint, a bespoke solution was developed. In collaboration with P&H Fabrications, three modular cladding sections were designed, allowing them to be craned into position and fixed internally. This approach eliminated the need for any external fixing works. A key consideration throughout the design process was ensuring that the modular system met all performance requirements, including passive fire compliance, thermal performance, air tightness, and structural integrity.
RLW installed Bauder Thermofol single ply roofing across large roof areas, providing a lightweight and reliable waterproofing solution suitable for the scale of the building. In addition, Bauder Bakor hotmelt roofing was used in areas where a fully bonded, high-durability system was required, offering added protection in more critical zones.
A further challenge involved the installation of the rainscreen cladding, which was constrained by the proximity of a neighbouring building. The limited space between the structures made the erection of a full scaffold impractical. RLW therefore proposed the use of rope access. A specialist team of abseilers were engaged to work in close coordination with our operatives, enabling the safe and efficient installation of the complete rainscreen cladding system. The external elevations were finished with PPC aluminium rainscreen cladding, selected to meet current fire performance requirements while maintaining a clean, modern appearance.

One of the more challenging aspects of the project was the installation of bespoke PPC aluminium cappings, many of which included complex shapes and profiles. Achieving accurate alignment and a good finish required careful setting out and close collaboration with the wider project team. By working through these details early and coordinating fabrication and installation, RLW was able to deliver the cappings in line with the architectural intent.
RLW’s work at South Staffs College reflects our practical experience delivering roofing and cladding packages within the education sector. Through good planning, clear communication, and attention to detail, the project was completed to a high standard and met both performance and appearance requirements.
